Media Department

The Department is currently composed of the following units: Radio, TV, News & Sports, Media Lab and Media Academy (approx. 70 staff)

The Radio Unit facilitates Members’ collaboration in the radio sector.

Radio activities are wide-ranging, from news and sport to drama and classical music. Music competitions, cultural programmes and festivals are also offered to Members to enrich their radio programming. Through the Euroradio network, EBU Members exchange concert recordings and live music from leading orchestras, concert seasons, festivals, and the very best of their national music across a range of genres. Rock, pop, dance and world music are offered to Members via the Eurosonic network, the world’s largest concert arena for contemporary music. Over 2,500 concerts and operas are relayed every year.

The Television Unit ("Eurovision TV") facilitates the exchange of ideas between Members across all genres, with a view to developing new TV programmes.

There are around TV 75 productions in development or production at any time. Eurovision TV brings Members together to exchange or produce content, providing 1,900 hours of programming to Members annually, including animation, fiction, documentary series, competitions for young musicians. The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) was the first major live TV programme created by the EBU, in 1956. Today, over 40 countries enter the competition, and the event is broadcast live to over 100 million viewers every year, making it Europe’s most widely known television entertainment show.
